🍅 Mosage - A Piece of Missouri History
Some tomatoes are more than just a variety, they’re a piece of living history. Mosage is one of those tomatoes.
Developed by renowned University of Missouri tomato breeder Dr. Victor N. Lambeth, Mosage was officially released in 1958 after nearly a decade of careful breeding and testing. Originally known as Mo. S.28, it was bred specifically for Midwestern gardeners, combining large, meaty fruit with vigorous growth, good productivity, heat tolerance, and valuable Fusarium-wilt resistance.
Its fascinating pedigree includes Earliana, Break-O-Day, Bonny Best, Rutgers, and a wild tomato species, bringing together genetics from both old garden varieties and wild tomato stock.
Mosage went through extensive testing before its release and was praised for its large, uniform fruit and dependable performance.
Today, Mosage is a rare reminder of the pioneering tomato work being done at the University of Missouri in the 1950s. Growing it isn’t just about harvesting a delicious old tomato, it’s about helping preserve a variety and a piece of agricultural history that might otherwise be forgotten.
