STOKESDALE - Introduced by Francis C. Stokes & Co. who published a 1936 catalog titled “Stokes for Tomato – We Present Stokesdale, a New Tomato of Unusual Promise.”
Stokesdale is one of the most important American tomato varieties of the late 1930s, even though it is largely forgotten today. It played a significant role in commercial tomato breeding and helped influence later varieties by Stokes.
Determinate, (I’m seeing more of a semi-determinate growth) early-mid season, regular leaf, moderate to heavy production. Medium- large bright scarlet red slicers. Firm flesh and excellent market quality. Lower seed count and Very meaty!! Fusarium wilt resistant.
Ok here’s my personal review. I grow 250-400 tomato varieties a year and typically only a handful impress me. This one is impressive! The plants are healthy and productive in my 100 degree heat. The fruits are surprisingly large. The taste, well, ok, wow- for a red slicer at 6.2 brix, this one has it all. It has the classic acidic taste with a punch of sweetness that I just can’t describe. It’s very meaty but pleasantly so. Little seed, as the first 3 have given me the seed that 1 typical slicer would.
For my tomato and seed friends, I’m adding pics of the de-seeded meaty fruit that’s left on the plate to show what I’m talking about. This one needs to get out into everyone’s gardens! Riddle me impressed! 😍
