Early Baltimore

Early Baltimore is another old variety from the Baltimore family and was developed from Indiana Baltimore as an earlier maturing selection.

The breeding work is associated with W. A. Huelsen at the University of Illinois, where the Baltimore line was being worked with for Midwestern growing conditions. By the 1930s, Early Baltimore was being offered as an earlier version of the dependable Baltimore type.

Plants are vigorous and productive, producing smooth, solid, deep red tomatoes with thick, meaty flesh. It kept many of the qualities that made the older Baltimore tomatoes so useful for canning while giving growers an earlier harvest.
