Indiana Baltimore

Indiana Baltimore is the next chapter in the old Baltimore tomato line. It was developed as a selection of Greater Baltimore, with work at the Indiana Agricultural Experiment Station to create a strain better suited to Indiana and Midwestern growing conditions.

By the late 1920s, this improved strain was being distributed as Indiana Baltimore and became especially useful to the Midwest canning industry.

Plants are vigorous and productive with medium to large, deep red tomatoes. The fruit is firm, solid and meaty with beautiful red interior color, which made it a great canning tomato. It’s also a nice all purpose variety for fresh eating, sauce and preserving.

I love that this isn’t just another old red tomato. It’s a selection of Greater Baltimore that was kept and improved for a specific growing region, and it would later become part of the story behind Early Baltimore.
