Break O’ Day

Break O’ Day is a wonderful old American tomato introduced by the USDA in 1931. It was developed from a cross of Marglobe × Marvana and was bred as an improved early red tomato with good disease resistance and dependable production.

The plants are indeterminate and produce smooth, round, bright red tomatoes generally around 6–8 ounces. The fruit is meaty and juicy with that good, balanced old-fashioned tomato flavor that works just as well for slicing as it does for canning.

Around 70–75 days to maturity.

Break O’ Day is one of those nearly forgotten varieties that I really enjoy preserving. It has almost a century of history behind it and is a great example of the early tomato breeding work that helped shape many of the varieties that came after it.
