Wickenburg-Prescott

Wickenburg-Prescott is an old Arizona heirloom with a pretty interesting story. For years it was simply known as the Prescott tomato, where former Arizona State Senator John Upton Hays grew it for around 50 years, saving seed and sharing plants with others. The seed was traced back to the Bralliar family of Wickenburg, Arizona, where it was grown and selected for the area’s hot, dry conditions.

The indeterminate plants are vigorous and productive, producing lots of small, pink-red plum-shaped tomatoes with dense, meaty flesh. The flavor is rich and nicely balanced, not overly sweet or acidic. They’re great eaten fresh but really shine for sauce and canning.

Around 75 days to maturity.

I really love the story behind this one. It survived because people kept saving it, growing it and passing the seed along. Today the name Wickenburg-Prescott honors both Arizona communities that played a part in keeping this old tomato alive.
